Earth Day 2023

Earth Day 2023 - What You Can Do to Help the Planet

Celebrate our planet this Earth Day. Do your part to protect the environment from the impacts of climate change.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual celebration, first launched in 1970 in the United States, following outrage over devastating oil spills. Its purpose was to educate the population about environmental issues and protest against the damage industrialisation causes to the planet.

The environmental movement has grown massively since it began. Today it is celebrated by people all over the world, mobilising over 1 billion people to advocate for the protection of our planet and a move to renewable energy.

When is Earth Day 2023?

Earth day is celebrated each year on the 22nd of April.

This year marks the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day, with the theme investing in our Planet, calling for action, innovation and implementation from all stakeholders to secure the future of our planet and holding everyone accountable.

Investing in our planet

The chosen theme revolves around the idea that sustainability and prosperity are linked for humanity and the economy. Businesses with stronger environmental standards are doing better than those who do not respect the environment.

Sustainability is no longer a choice for businesses; it is a necessity. The physical effects of climate change are already having a detrimental impact on economies around the world and this is set to continue if change doesn't occur.

Increasingly a growing number of consumers are also becoming more conscious of their spending, buying less from, or even boycotting brands considered unsustainable and voting for environmentalism with their money.

At Eversfield Organic, we pride ourselves on our sustainable and ethical ethos. We have a deep appreciation and respect for the natural environment which remains at the core of everything we do.

We use agroecology methods to farm our fields, as well as a closed loop sustainability system which reduces external inputs to the farm and uses excess food waste to create compost.

Additionally, our packaging return scheme enables it to be used time and time again. When you buy groceries from us, you can be sure that it's as sustainable and ethical as can be.

3 ways make a difference for Earth Day 2023

It can be overwhelming to know where to begin when trying to be more sustainable. Eco-anxiety can make us feel powerless to protect the planet, but even small changes can make a big impact.

Here are three easy ways you can make a difference:

1)   Eat seasonally

Eating seasonally, locally sourced produce not only helps you get the freshest food, but are also reduces the food miles and energy consumption taken for it to reach your plate.

Studies have found that food miles contribute 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year. This number cannot be eliminated, but it can be reduced, achievable if more people buy local and seasonal produce.

2)   Reduce your food waste

Reducing the amount of food waste that enters landfill is a sure-fire way of reducing our carbon footprint. When food is sent to landfill it rots and releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. By reducing the food waste that enters landfill we could save an estimated 36 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

Reduce your food waste by buying only what you need. Get creative with leftovers to make new meals or create a compost heap in your garden to help maintain healthy soils.

3)   Support sustainable businesses.

As mentioned previously, as a consumer you possess great power in being able to vote with your money. Choosing to shop from sustainable businesses instead of unsustainable ones sends a message to corporations: environmental reform is necessary for prosperity.

When shopping for food, clothes and other essentials do some research into the brands you’re buying from and decide whether their practices are in the best interests of the planet before you purchase.
