An afternoon tea has been a British tradition since the mid 19th century, in which the seventh Duchess of Bedford would find herself feeling rather hungry in the afternoon. To fill the gap between lunch and dinner, the Duchess would ask for a tray of bread, butter and cake mid-afternoon, and soon invited friends to join her for this tea. It didn’t take long for this habit to become a fashionable social event, with many ladies in the late 1800s taking tea in the drawing room between four and five pm.
Traditionally, an afternoon tea is made up of small sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, cakes and pastries, and of course a pot of tea. Today, our afternoon cup of tea may be just that (or occasionally with an organic biscuit to dunk!), and the activity of an afternoon tea saved for special occasions.
