Eversfield Organic - Quality Organic Produce Delivered to Your Door
Our Market Garden
Our Market Garden, located in the heart of our organic farm in Devon, was launched in the summer of 2020 to complement our closed-loop sustainability ethos on the farm and provide the freshest organic vegetables to our farm shops and restaurants.
Keep your eye out for Market Garden produce available according to seasonality online throughout the year!
Growing our own fruit, vegetables and herbs to fuel all aspects of the company was always the intention when Mark started up Eversfield Organic in 2004.
With years of experience of organic farming and food, we eventually decided to transform a patch of land that had previously housed our pigs! It was quick to see that we'd have our work cut out if we were to grow produce in abundance due to the soil quality.
This particular field was steeply slanted and consisted mostly of shale, clay and gravel. Thus, it has been a slow process to convert the soil to a grower's paradise. However, thanks to a lot of hard work from Kelvin and the team, we're proud to be able to offer produce fresh from our own earth.
With a focus on growing some of the more unusual organic fruit and vegetables, including heritage and heirloom varieties, the Market Garden is a paradise of organic produce.
Growing in a market garden system means a much smaller scale than large farms. This allows for more varieties and the ability to choose based on taste and nutrition and season. This is a much more sustainable process when compared to large-scale setups who often choose crops based on success rates and profit margins.
We also benefit from being able to speak directly to our shops, cafes and restaurants to grow with more knowledge of what our customers, staff and chefs would like to see. We're always on the lookout for new produce!
Taking lessons from all manner of growing techniques, we aim to not only grow amazingly tasty produce but also to give something back to the land that is the soul of our business.
Across the farm and beyond, we operate a closed loop system where possible. The intention is that nothing from outside the farm aids the productivity on the farm; be this nourishment for our herd (they only graze on grass) to fertiliser for our market garden (we feed our plants with naturally occurring nutrients), making use of what the land provides us.
Our herd is fed on our luscious grass, wildflowers and hay all year round. The Market Garden contributes to this process as we utilise waste as compost to nurture the soil that grows the food.
As much as our Market Garden feeds our inns and farm shops with fresh organic produce, they feed it back, providing nutrient rich compost from food waste, combining with manure from our Aberdeen Angus herd.
Working predominantly as a 'no-dig' garden, this organic method leaves the soil largely undisturbed, emulating natural processes and resulting in healthier plants, less pests and a flourishing soil ecosystem!
The meticulous thought that goes into the way we grow and care for our soil gives all our seedlings the best start in life. This translates to a bountiful supply of organic vegetables throughout the year.
