Meet Our Suppliers: Roots and Wings
As the December days disappear and we creep ever closer to the festive hubbub, stocking your cupboards with snack reinforcements begins to become a priority.
Luckily there’s no reason to fret as we’ve got all you need to keep even the fussiest family members content at Christmas time thanks to our friends at Roots and Wings. I sat down with Olivia from their team to dive into the brand’s story, values, and the importance of family.
Roots and Wings, what’s the inspiration behind the name?
“Our name is born out of the adage ‘the best things in life you can give your children are roots for stability and confidence and wings for aspiration’. We believe that wholesome, natural food is at the cornerstone of family life and we create products that are the natural, organic provisions for everyone to love and enjoy.”
Your ethos of supplying organic goods closely ties with our own. Do you think that this really makes a difference in taste?
“For us, the great taste that we’re known for stems from the skill, care, and time that is taken to combine them into our award-winning products. We use traditional hand-crafting methods and small-batch production to make our food. We’ve been honoured to be recognised in the Great Taste Awards, including as a Great Taste Award Producer due to our consistent award wins over the years. Our zingy sherbet lemons, our marmalade and our lemon curd have won awards recently as well as many other products.”
What goes through your mind when selecting the producers of your ingredients?
“All of our products are sourced in the UK and we work with producers from every corner. What unites them all is the skill, care and passion for making the very best products, hand-crafted and in small batches. For example, our award-winning marmalade is made in open copper pans by hand so that the integrity of the fruit is maintained. We’ve even had customers say it’s like sunshine in a jar when you have a bite!
Much like your own Recipe Hub, we share recipes and ideas with our customers and particularly like to place an emphasis on cooking with the whole family.”
As a family-run service here at Eversfield, we agree that food should be enjoyed together. How important do you feel the role of providing organic produce has become in the current environment?
“Organic food has never been more important. We believe we all have a responsibility to care for our environment. Organic farming and regenerative practices help to protect the environment in many ways. Artificial fertilisers and chemicals are damaging our wildlife, particularly insects and crucial pollinators, not to mention the negative effects on the taste and nutritional value of food. Organic farms increase biodiversity, have healthier soils and produce healthier soils so what’s not to love? We ensure that all of our products are GM and palm-oil-free. It’s paramount for us to farm with compassion for the environment and sustainability in mind.”
You do amazing work with children’s charities also, can you unpack this for us?
“We have committed to donating 10% of our profits to charities concerned with the needs of children. For example, we’ve been so proud to support Ickle Pickles, a neo-natal charity that is devoted to providing much-needed funding and support to maternity units. All of the charities we support are voted for by our consumers. It’s our aim to reflect the nurturing nature of our ethos through all that we do.”
We’re excited to stock much of your Christmas range, can you tell us about the products?
“It’s wonderful that you’re going to be stocking our seasonal items, including some new releases and we can’t wait to hear what your customers think about them. For instance, our organic brittles selection is hand-baked with pumpkin, sunflower, coconut, sesame, maple syrup, flax and chia seeds and perfect when paired with cheese, pate and dips. We’ve also got something slightly more indulgent with our new all-butter shortbreads. These are baked slowly for maximum taste with warmly-spiced gingerbread and zesty lemon making the cut alongside our classic shortbread.
You can’t beat a good mince pie at Christmas and we’ve got one for everyone. Our classic half dozen, 12 mini pies, and gluten-free option are all divine when paired with dollops of organic clotted cream. We’ve also got a mini Christmas pud available for those who want another chance to sample a traditional festive dessert. We recommend pairing it with brandy clotted cream for added indulgence.”
